The House of Representatives on
Tuesday drummed support for the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwumi
Adesina, to emerge as the President of the African Development Bank.
Lawmakers urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, and member
countries of the Economic Community of West African States to push for
the success of Adesina.
A motion, seeking support for Adesina, was moved by a member from Kano State, Mr. Munir Dan-Agundi.
He called for careful selection of the next president of the
bank, saying a candidate of the minister’s pedigree was needed to
strengthen the polices of the bank.
Part of the motion reads, “The sterling and academic qualities of
the minister of agriculture and rural development, coupled with his
experience of working in Francophone and Anglophone countries and his
tremendous passion to help eradicate poverty through reduction of
unemployment among Nigerian youths qualify him for the position.
“Dr Akinwumi Adesina, the Nigerian minister is one of the short listed candidates for the job.”
Members passed the motion in a unanimous voice vote at the session, which was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal.
