The House of Representatives on Tuesday
asked the Federal Government to start the reconstruction and
rehabilitation of towns and villages recently liberated from Boko Haram
insurgents by the Nigerian military.
The House observed that the affected
towns and villages, mostly in the North-East of the country, had been
destroyed by the insurgents.
It noted that basic amenities including
health care services, food and water were not available to quicken the
resettlement of victims of the attacks.
In the resolution which the lawmakers
passed on the issue, they said that the victims returning to the
liberated communities were “physically and psychologically desirous” of
living their normal lives, but were hampered by the lack of amenities.
The resolution followed a motion
sponsored by the member representing Bama/Ngala/Kala Balge Federal
Constituency in Borno State, Mr. Abdulrahman Terab.
Bama, for example, was under occupation
by the insurgents for many months before it was liberated by the
military in one of the rescue battles.
The
House said the reconstruction should commence “immediately”, as funds
had been provided for the rehabilitation of the communities under the
Presidential Initiative for the North-East and the Victims Support Fund.
“The return of the Internally Displaced
Persons to their communities must be supported by certain basic
infrastructure and rehabilitation as already envisaged by various
government intentions, programmes and as well as captured in the 2015
budget,” the House stated.
