The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has commended the Chief of
Defence Intelligence, Rear Adm. Gabriel Okoi, for the establishment of a
Defence Dialysis centre.
Jonathan said, while inaugurating the Defence Intelligence Agency
Dialysis Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, that the centre was invaluable to
the treatment of kidney related diseases and would reduce the incidence
of premature deaths emanating from such sicknesses in the future.
He added that it was imperative to provide well-equipped hospitals of international standard for the Armed Forces.
He noted that the President of Nigeria and his family should be
treated in the military hospital as it is being done in other countries.
The President urged the society to give the expected level of
attention to issues affecting the military and to provide well-equipped
facilities for them in view of their sacrifices to the country.
Jonathan stated, “Within this period, when you look at the
television, you see people complaining about people who have kidney
problems. The first level of intervention is dialysis before the more
expensive kidney transplant. Before this time, there were quite a few
number of dialysis centers in the country, this led to many premature
deaths in the country.
“This initiative to bring up this centre to take care of member of
the Armed Forces in times of need and extending same to the Abuja
community is commendable.
“In most countries the President receives treatment in the military
hospitals and I believe I should as well with my family should. It is
expected therefore that the military hospitals should be well equipped.”
The Chief of Defence Intelligence said the centre was established
to respond to the increasing incidence of renal failure in the society.
Okoi explained that 36.8 million Nigerians, which is about 23 per cent of the population, are suffering from kidney disorder.
CDI said the available statistics indicated that one out of every seven Nigeria had kidney related issues
He added that the centre was expected to render homo-dialysis
services to the military community with a four-machine capacity in
Abuja.
