At least 14 people were killed and 48 others injured in Nigeria’s
northeastern state of Borno when an explosion hit members of a local
security group tasked to protect civilians against attacks, a security
source and local hospital confirmed to Xinhua on Wednesday.
The incident occurred late Tuesday in Monguno town when members of
the security group were on their way to deliver recovered explosive
devices to the bomb disposal unit at a military base, said a senior army
officer who preferred to be anonymous.
A senior staff at the state-run Maiduguri General Hospital said they received the bodies of the 14 deceased early Wednesday.
“We are still treating 48 victims of the incident, some in terrible
conditions,” added the source, who was not officially authorized to
speak to media on the development.
