The Ondo State government has advised the federal government to re-consider its stance on laying off the thousands of health workers engaged under the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme midwives scheme.
It said it would set back the achievements recorded on maternal and child survival in the last few years.
It was learnt that 400 medicare workers engaged under the SURE-P may be disengaged by the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, who gave the advice during a meeting with the embattled health workers, suggested that the Federal Government should rather block leakages in the system and work to improve the programme’s impact at reducing maternal and child mortality in the country.
He said, “The Federal Government should not have pulled-out completely. Even if it wants to do so, it should be a gradual process. If they are able to block the leakages in the system, especially with the newly introduced Performance Based Financing, it will help sustain the programme for more effective health service delivery, especially in the grassroots.”
He however disclosed that the state government was working out plans to retain the 400 health workers employed under the SURE-P if eventually they were laid off by the Federal Government.
