LAWMA’s truck catches fire near filling station

Scene of the incident
There was panic in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State on Tuesday after a PSP truck of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency went up in flames close to a filling station.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident, which happened around 2pm, could have been worse, but for the intervention of emergency workers and firefighters.
Our correspondent was told that the waste truck had developed some electrical faults and before anything could be done, was engulfed in flames.
The driver reportedly abandoned it.
A worker with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was no casualty.
He said, “The truck developed some electrical faults. Soon, the vehicle caught fire. The driver quickly abandoned it and fled.
“Also, because there were some combustible materials in the truck, the fire raged on for a long time and that caused fear in the people around the place. But thankfully, nobody died or sustained any injury.”
Our correspondent was told that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Fire Service and policemen were on ground to handle the situation.
The incident was said to have caused gridlock on the road as LASTMA officials had tough time controlling the traffic.
Residents were said to have become apprehensive due to the closeness of the inferno to a filling station in the area.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency received a distress call around 2.09pm, adding that the Agege Fire Station responded with 10, 000 litres of water.
He said, “We met the fire raging. The fire severely damaged the truck.
“It destroyed the engine compartment and the tyres. We could not find the driver, but the owner later showed up with his wife.
“The truck was carrying refuse, including tyres. The Agege Fire Station responded with 10,000 litres of water and had to replenish it. It took about two hours to quell the flames.”
