The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Friday sealed up a popular Lagos mall for allegedly selling and distributing counterfeit wines and spirits.
Some eyewitnesses, who spoke with our correspondent at the scene, said the NAFDAC personnel sealed the store.
The NAFDAC Public Relations Officer in charge of Enforcement Operations, Anslem Okonkwor, confirmed that the exercise was a routine one and aimed at ensuring that products conform to regulatory standards.
According to him, the seized items are mainly alcoholic products.
Okonkwor said, “There were complaints received about the sale of cloned wines and spirits in the mall and we went there to inspect. We found the products and seized them.
“The exercise was carried out by the regulatory officers from the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of the NAFDAC. The products were confiscated and evacuated from the outlet.
“The exercise was carried out at the Gbagada, Ajah and Isheri outlets of the store. Investigations will commence and the outlets will remain closed until we are through.”
Meanwhile, Okonkwor said NAFDAC had reopened multinational confectioneries and food outlet, Chocolate Royale, following the conclusion of its investigations.
The outlet was sealed in May for illegal storage and use of expired ingredients and products in preparing food and confectioneries served to its customers.
