Ekiti NMA suspends strike

The Nigerian Medical Association, Ekiti State, has suspended its strike following the release of the 11 kidnapped victims in the state.
The association had on May 9 embarked on strike to demand the release of a former Chief Medical Director of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Patrick Adegun, and a theatre Nurse with the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Mrs. Margaret Aladeneka.
Adegun, who had earlier been released, and his wife, Kikelomo, were kidnapped at about 8pm near their residence at Oke Ila in the state capital.
Their kidnap came five days after Aladeneka was abducted, while a yet to be identified man was killed during the operation.
However, the victims and others abducted across the state were released in the early hours of Saturday by their abductors.
A May 25 letter addressed to Governor Ayodele Fayose by the NMA Chairman in Ekiti, Dr. John Akinbote, said the suspension took immediate effect.
“Sequel to the resolutions of emergency general meeting of our noble association held today, 25th May, 2015, we hereby notify you and your good office of our decision to suspend the ongoing no-work protest, which started based on serial kidnappings and security situation in the State.
“We are using this avenue to request for improvement and sustenance of security measures in place in the State,” the letter said.
The association called on the State Government to ensure that the necessary legal frameworks were put in place to curtail such incident from rearing its ugly head in the state again.
It also appealed to the government to put necessary machinery in place for expeditious arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the nefarious act.
