Family seeks freedom for Boko Haram suspect

The family of an Islamic Studies lecturer at the Kogi State University, Dr. Nazif Yunus, who was arrested on the suspicion that he is a member of the militant sect, Boko Haram, has demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
They said that their breadwinner is not a member of Boko Haram and that his continued detention is an act of injustice.
In a statement issued in Jos on Sunday by his wife, Mrs. Sa’adatu Yunus, the family said that his incarceration, two years after he was arrested, was inhuman and unjustified
The statement entitled, “In the interest of justice,” said, “It has become imperative on us as the wives, children and entire family members of the detained Dr. Nazif Yunus, to speak about our heartfelt position to the outer world as we insist on seeking justice and freedom for our family head.
“It has been almost two years now that our father and brother was taken away unjustifiably from us by the officials of the State Security Service, Plateau State Command, on the 29 October, 2013 and was later transferred to Abuja.
“Though we are very much aware that a case has been instituted against him by the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the federation but the process is taking longer than necessary.
“We are still wondering why Sheikh Nazif Yunus is still in detention whereas those youths that claimed he was “their spiritual leader” had since been discharged and released after the SSS said it had no case against them.
“But surprisingly, the alleged ‘leader,’ whose arrest by the SSS was on account of the confessional statement by the youths, is still in detention.”
