A FORMER Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Leyii Kwanee, has condemned the manner the outgoing legislature ended its activities, describing it as shameful.
Kwanee said in a statement on Sunday that the lawmakers, who were only 17 in number, hurriedly ended the last plenary session without addressing some of the issues the immediate past executive arm of government failed to consider.
The valedictory session, which was held last week Thursday, was said to have hurriedly been done with the lawmakers failing to address some issues affecting the state, especially unpaid workers’ salaries.
The former deputy speaker described as “a desecration of parliamentary decorum” a situation where the former Speaker’s driver was made Sergeant-at-Arms during the last session of the House.
He explained that the 17 lawmakers failed to address the disagreement between them and members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria.
According to the statement, “A former Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Leyii Kwanee, has expressed shock and disappointment at the manner the 7th Assembly ended its legislative business in the state.
“The so-called valedictory session of the 7th Assembly that would have ended in glamour, shamefully came to an end within minutes and failed to address some issues the executive arm could not address as it bowed out.”
The former deputy speaker expressed disappointment that the legislature could not resolve the welfare needs of PASAN members.
